Using Read and Write Gold 5 for Text-to-Speech on the MAC

The Read and Write Gold 5 application for the Macintosh can be used with CourseSmart to provide text-to-speech capabilities. There are multiple ways that Read and Write Gold 5 can be used with CourseSmart. The preferred method is to use the Screenshot Reader.

  • Using the Read Write Gold application does not require the Accessible Reader used by print-challenged users.
  • Start the Read Write Gold application
  • Set the Speech menu options to “Auto Speak Imported Text” and “Continuous Reading” as shown below:



  • If you are in the full-screen application mode, click the option to change to Tool-Bar mode:


Screenshot Reader Method

The Screenshot reader will work with any CourseSmart book. To use the Screenshot reader:

  • Click on the Screenshot Reader button in the toolbar:



  • The Screenshot Reader will present a cross-hairs that you can use to highlight the text to be read:



  • When you release the cross-hairs, Read and Write Gold will start reading the text aloud while highlighting the words being read.

Imported Text Method – Flash Based Books

Each CourseSmart book is available in one of two available formats: Flash-based and Print-Fidelity. Each format requires a slightly different technique for using imported text. You will know if your book is Flash-based if the Reading Option of “Continuous” is available for selection as shown below:

          

The following instructions describe the procedure for using imported text with your book.

  • Open the eTextbook you wish to read and navigate to the page that you wish to read.
  • When you are on the page you want read, use your mouse to select the area of text you want read out loud and select “Copy” from the pop-up menu:



  • Immediately use the keystroke Command-C
  • The selected text will appear in the Read and Write Gold application window and reading aloud will commence along with the highlighted display of text.



  • You may change back to the tool bar mode to navigate to your next reading area, or you can simply move the application window out of the way:

Imported Text Method – Print Fidelity Based Books

If you only see Single Page and Thumbnails as display options in the reader, your book is in Print Fidelity format. The page display options will appear as below:

          

The following instructions describe the procedure for using imported text with your book.

  • Open the eTextbook you wish to read and navigate to the page that you wish to read.
  • When you are on the page you want read, use your mouse to select the area of text you want read out loud and select “Copy” from the pop-up menu:



  • A pop-up box will appear with the selected text displayed:



  • Click your cursor within the text and press Command-A, this will select all the text you have copied:



  • Press Command-C to copy, Read and Write Gold will open the application window and initiate reading the text:
