Using TextAloud 3 for Windows for Text-to-Speech

TextAloud 3 on Windows can be used to provide text-to-speech with the CourseSmart reader.

  • Using the TextAloud 3 application does not require the Accessible Reader. There is no need to contact CourseSmart Support for this option.

Each CourseSmart book is available in one of two available formats: Flash-based and Print-Fidelity. Each format requires a slightly different technique for reading with TextAloud. Instructions for using TextAloud with each format follow.

Flash-Based Book Method

You will know if your book is Flash-based if the Reading Option of “Continuous” is available for selection as shown below:

The following instructions describe the procedure for using ClaroRead with your book.

  • Start the TextAloud application

  • The TextAloud application will start showing either a previous article or a default (blank) article. Each item you read out loud can be either a new article or appended to an existing article. Each article will be represented in a tab.

  • Return to the CourseSmart Reader and highlight the area you want read, then select the Copy option

  • After selecting the Copy option, TextAloud will display the TextAloud Clipboard Prompt
  • You may select an option from the drop down list. If you want the text read outloud, but you do not need to see highlighting of the words as they are read, you may select “Speak text” and click on Perform. If you want to see the text highlighted as it is read, accept the default “Add new article” and click on Perform, or click on New (these actions have identical results).

  • If you select New or Add New Article > Perform, TextAloud will automatically create an article in the TextAloud application window and bring the TextAloud window to the front.
  • Select the “Speak” button in the TextAloud toolbar

  • TextAloud will start reading out loud and highlighting the words being read
  • You can click on Pause or Stop in the toolbar to stop reading
